Tonight was 70s night and was the second of a three game home stand versus the Battle Creek Revolution. After the New Years matinee game, you could still feel the tension between the teams when we stepped on the ice for warm ups Saturday. Players were looking across the red line wondering how the Saturday game would be played, and what the outcome would be.
The Revolution have been said to be a good contender in this league, and they gave us a run tonight, but in the end it wasn’t enough.
After going down 2-0 in the first period, we all had a gut check and stepped up in the second. The scoring was started by Matt Moffat on a hell of a snipe short side. A few minutes later, Shane Heffernan scored what would be two of his goals on the night and a three point game. His first goal was on a powerplay and his second was from the goal line.
The Revolution came back though, and the score was tied 3-3 going into the third. We started off the scoring by me finishing off a great pass from Heffernan, which would be my third point on the night. The Revolution answered back though, but we still managed to pull through with goals by John Sarno, Matt Moffat again, and Brad Townsend on an empty net to seal the deal. Players were diving everywhere and doing whatever they could to keep the puck out.
Every guy was taking pride in the “blue collar” category that wins hockey games, and in the end, we won 7-5.
Going into the third game Sunday should be a rough one. With two fights on Thursday and two fights today, bad blood is boiling and players are getting hungry. We are looking to keep our momentum riding from these last two games, and want to run away with first place in the league.
Playing the same team three times in a row builds a rivalry, and rivalries are what bring in fan support and increase intensities of games. Watch out for an exciting one on Sunday.
