Blog from Head Coach Darren Seid 12/29/08

I am going to contribute to the Shooters Blog once a week to give you my view of the team on and off the ice...so make sure you come back and check it out!
This past weekend got me excited! Our attendance on Saturday against the Icemen was 747. The fans got to see a good game with us picking up a win 8 to 4. Saturday we had a promo for the local girl scouts. Saturday we also had John “Jurko” Jurkovic suit up and play. It was great seeing him on the ice, he had a hit, an assist, and even got a penalty. We are selling Jurko’s game worn jersey on Ebay.

On Sunday we still had 632 fans. Sunday we had a promo for the local boy scouts. Sunday we picked up a 7-2 win against Evansville. Joe Marshall had a great professional debut with 2 goals Saturday and 2 goals on Sunday.

This week we have a special game on New Year’s Day. Faceoff is at 3:50pm at the Midwest Training & Ice Center.

Other upcoming home games:
Saturday 1/3/08 – 8:15PM

Promo – 70’s night (Dress in your 70’s gear to receive FREE admission and ½ price t-shirt) – Best dressed in 70’s gear will win season tickets for the remainder of the games.

JURKO Becomes Next 2 Sport Athlete

JURKO Becomes Next 2 Sport Athlete – we want to invite you all to watch Calumet City’s Son - John “Jurko” Jurkovic play in tonight’s game. Come out and support Jurko!
Game time is 8:15pm CST. Warm-ups begin at 7:50pm CST.

John “Jurko” Jurkovic is becoming a member of the prestigious “2 Sport Athlete Club”. Other members include Bo Jackson, Michael Jordan, and Deion Sanders. John will be suiting up for the Chi-Town Shooters of the All American Hockey Association in tonight’s game vs. the Evansville Icemen.

"Jurko" is in his seventh year as a member of "Mac, Jurko & Harry" on ESPN 1000. His experiences as an NFL defensive tackle, silly wit and ability to invent new words are his trademarks. John played for four teams (Miami, Green Bay, Jacksonville and Cleveland) over his 10-year NFL career. The Good Kid's "common man" demeanor and approachability have resulted in his being embraced by the Chicago sports community.

Hailing from Calumet City, John prepped at Thornton Fractional North High School. After a stellar high school career, the self-proclaimed "dashing young Croatian" took his skills to Eastern Illinois University, where he earned All-American honors and was the Gateway Conference Defensive Player of the Year in '88 and in '89. Jurko signed with the Dolphins as an undrafted free agent in April, 1990.

During Jurko's playing days, he seized every opportunity he was given to do radio and television. He started in radio in '92, while with the Packers, and soon added television to his resume. Jurko also was a regular contributor to radio and television programs while playing for the Jaguars and the Browns.

After his NFL career, Jurko continued his TV duties, doing color commentary for the Arena Football League on TNN in '01. John also broadcast games for NFL Europe that year and he was commissioned to do five NFL games in '01 and in '02 for Fox. Those experiences led him to the AFL Chicago Rush, for which he served as analyst for two seasons in '02 and in '03.
Jurko resides in Northwest Indiana, with his wife, Brandy, and their three children, Niko, Jake and Grace. His hobbies include golf, hunting and Texas hold'em. He is largely involved with several charties, including "The Friends of Michael Williams," which raises money for neuroblastoma research.
